Your reference for nomenclature?

What to do you use as your reference for taxonomic nomenclature when writing
articles, books, etc?

Over the past seven or eight years I've generally followed the naming
used by the Royal Horticultural Society in their online database and
Plant Finder, but sometimes deviate if I find a monograph or specialist
who has a strong argument for a different name. For example, if Fred
Case said that a trillium should be named a certain way I'd probably
take his word for it over the RHS.

Lately I've been researching familial designations, classes,
orders, and all of that good stuff. Unfortunately, it seems to be a mess
and I can't figure out which one to use. There's the old Cronquist system
(383 families), APG II (1499), Takhtajan (570 families), etc.

I don't even know if the RHS follows/cares about the upper hierarchies
for plant classification -- I can't find anything on their site about
it.

Does anyone know which direction this is going? Are there any recommended
references out there?

Thanks,

Chris
