Re: multimedia projectors

Lumens are the thing.

I bought my digital projector about five years ago with advice from a
projection pro. It has 2300 lumens and is a Dell model. It has been bright
enough to project well even in a large room that is not completely darkened.
Now there are newer models at half the price with equivalent or higher
lumens. The newer ones connect to your laptop with a USB cord. Some will
even project your show or images directly from an image card. Last year my
rock garden chapter bought an Epson model with 2300 lumens that does a great
job. The cost was under $600 -- the equivalent model is probably less now.
It is more than adequate for a room seating a hundred or a hundred fifty
people.

For PowerPoint, get someone to show you a few pointers and it will save you
hours of studying manuals and watching tutorials.

My tip (borrowed from garden writer Beverly Fitts) is to make the background
black. Then the image shows on screen without distractions or unwanted
borders, just like slides. Labels at the top of the image are easier for the
audience to see.

I had a crisis with my Dell. Its bulb glowed orange and flickered instead of
turning on. I hated to but decided to buy the $400 replacement bulb. When I
googled the bulb model number I found a Dell help site that said to vacuum
out the inside of the projector because dust in there would disable a
perfectly good bulb. Well what did I have to lose -- I got out the vacuum
and this solved my problem. I am still using the original bulb.

Good luck, Ray!
