Re: Pearl's Premium grass seed
Hello, Ailsa!
I have had some great experience with Pearl's since I got it as a trial about 2 years ago. Here's a brief recap of my most recent experience with it.
We had to take down a 20-something year old weeping cherry tree in our front lawn and decided to grass over the entire area which had developed a "belly." The area expanded way beyond the drip line of the tree after regrading etc. I took the opp'ty for a little experiment and used the PP for a small patch and our landscaper used his "high grade mix" for the rest. We also used a straw blanket to protect the seeding from the birds, etc. I did the usual 2x/day watering and all that.
After about 10 days, the PP growth was pushing up outside the blanket and was 2-3x higher and stronger than the other planting. We dug up each area to inspect the roots and the PP growth was phenomenally longer, thicker, whiter, etc. than the other grass. My landscaper brought his landscaper buddies over to inspect and see what we were experiencing 'cause if I had told him about this, we all know he wouldn't have believed it. Plus I had more seed to use so I then overseeded the entire area w/PP. Why not???
The only two problems I have with the seed is that it is extremely expensive which I tell myself pays balances out in fewer inputs like mowing, fertilizing, etc. The second issue is availability: I can only get it at Whole Foods Market, all of which are at least an hour from me by car (no public transportation).
Lastly, I haven't had many seasons with it yet in a zone 5 garden, but so far, so good.
