I like Picasa, but you do have to learn a bit about it before starting, I've found. I don't know why the dates are the automatic names for folders, but I did learn I had to name my folders and not let Picasa do it by default. 

There are bunches of how-to books on Picasa, including one called "Beginners Guide to Picasa." (I haven't read any of these, but you might look at local bookstores, and ask at your public library. Amazon had lots listed when I searched.)

You might also do a Google search to see what's available online as a free tutorial.

You'd be better off with a solid overview of the program if you're going to store all your images on it.
