Free Kindle version today: publishing guru Dan Poynter's book on writing and promoting your book
A certain number of Kindle eBooks are in a program on www.amazon.com where they are free to download for one day only. The next day the price reverts to normal.
Today (May 5), publishing guru Dan Poynter's book on writing and publishing is available free on Kindle. I have been a follower of Dan's for years. This is the electronic version of a book that came out on paper some years ago which appears to have been updated.
Books: Tips, Stories, & Advice on Writing, Publishing, & Promoting [Kindle Edition] by Dan Poynter
I downloaded it this morning and read about a third of it so far. Some of the advice is well known to me, for instance to write a complete draft first, quickly shaping the main ideas, and then polish and develop it thoroughly and carefully in various stages. Easier said than done!
Dan says to make the first chapter exciting. I am not talking about a novel. Even a how-to can have humor, drama, and meaningful benefits for the reader, right up front.
Why would anyone let his or her book be given away free by Amazon, even for just a day? Here are the reasons I can think of. Although Dan didn't say, he speaks by example.
* Getting free publicity -- getting a buzz going and letting the world know that the book or ebook exists.
* Earning higher positioning in book ranking on Amazon. This lets your book show up toward the front of search results rather than the tail end and will help sell the item later.
* Reminding your fans about you and why they like you.
* Getting higher star ratings from readers -- if they like the work.
* Actually helping people who then recommend you to their friends.
Cheers! Betty
