Re: Sweet Peet Question

It's actually made just a few miles from me in Westchester (not Long
Island) and sold in bags and bulk all over the area. They collect the manure
from local horse farms (local laws don't allow them to keep the manure from
barns on the properties) so Sweet Peat picks it up and brings it to their
facility where they 'compost' it and add other organic material. In the
early days the product could be quiite 'hot' and inconsistent but it's been
pretty stable for a number of years.

Because it contains manure from various farms and small horse operations
there's really no telling what's in the manure so I wouldn't consider using
it for an organic garden or project. Horses can use lots of meds and
antibiotics. On the other hand there's a nursery down the street that mixes the
sweet peat with a few other things to lighten it up and it's wonderful in
outdoor planting beds as a planting medium.

If anyone really needs more specific info please let me know and I'll see
if there's any literature around and what I can glean from the retailers
that are selling it.

Hello Smart Gardeners!

Do any of you have any experience with a mulch product called Sweet Peet?
It's being marketing locally and I've had two clients ask about it this
week. The only info I'm finding online is marketing hype. According to the
manufacturer, It's peat moss, manure and an unnamed soil conditioner which
"transforms" itself into humusâso 4 products in one?!
It's not bad stuff, just expensive. It's sold in bags and is several
dollars more than any other compost bagged product in the garden centers.

Thanks,
Phyllis
