book awards

Hi All:

Does anyone here have any experience with book awards programs, such  
as the American Horticultural Society's or anyone else's?  Has anyone  
ever nominated a book or had their book nominated?  I'd like to know  
if there's usually a charge for a publisher to submit a book for  
consideration, or anything else anyone can tell me about the process.   
Do you think that book awards are legit?  I've always been suspicious  
that they're like advertorial--tit for tat, in exchange for $$.
