Re: better gnomes and gorgons

Garden gnomes have a venerable history dating back to 19th century Germany where they were placed in gardens to ward off evil spirits (do nematodes, marauding deer, black spot, and disease count as evil spirits?). The first gnome was brought to England from Germany in 1947 by Sir Charles Isham, 10th Baronet. He purchased 21 terra-cotta garden gnome figures in Germany and placed them as ornaments in his Lamport Hall garden in Northhamptonshire. Only one of Isham's original purchases remains today. Its replica is exhibited at Lamport Hall, while the original, which is insured for £1 million, is kept safely hidden. Interesting that Chelsea decided to drop the ban on gnomes for the 100th year of the flower show.
