And I think I'd rather read her words first. I might save the words of
'curvy' garden writers for when I'm ready for garden fantasy or garden
humor. Maybe not.

Keeping up with the curve gets expensive. One of the points made was that
writers couldn't *afford* to trial all those plants. If you can't afford to
trial plants without company subsidies, how can any average gardener afford
to buy those plants? They can't, on average.

In my opinion, garden writing is word combinations used to describe a world
of technique, tools, and plants. Very few writers are lyrical enough to
sell by words alone, so most writers have to depend on the value of what
they're describing in order to sell their words. Techniques are general
enough for all of us to share, so the plants and tools you choose to
describe are what really sells your product.

To be blunt, I feel no desire to read your words if I can't afford the
plants or tools you describe. I've canceled magazine subscriptions because
most of the plants profiled within those pages were too expensive. Counted
up, any two profiled plants (or, sometimes, just one plant) were similar in
cost to a year's subscription, and any five of my selections from those
pages would blow my gardening budget for the whole year. Thank goodness
some magazines still promote products I can afford.
