Keeping up with the curve gets expensive.  One of the points made was that
writers couldn't *afford* to trial all those plants.  If you can't afford to
trial plants without company subsidies, how can any average gardener afford
to buy those plants?  They can't, on average.


???  So you are saying that I should spend my own money to test the tools so I can recommend them?   This is illogical.  We can't "afford" all these plants and tools because we test so many.  For an article I am working on right now, I am testing over a dozen tools in order to be able to recommend four or five best ones.  The dozens of tools amount to hundreds of dollars, about as much as I'll get paid for the article.

A gardener will buy only one or maybe two of the tools if that is how many they can afford.  My obligation is to list good  tools that are hopefully at a variety of price points.

Same thing applies to plants. 

The whole point of trialing products is that the companies budget for giving products to people like us to see a) whether we like them and b) whether we will write about them.  No one obligates me to write about an item I don't care for or that doesn't work for me.

Like it or not, that's the way the system works and from my perspective, it works quite effectively.
