[GWL]: land covenants
One of the major problems looming over gardeners, plant and seed
companies, and landscape designers is the existence of land covenants
written for subdivisions by developers who want to outdo their competitors
in exclusivity. Hence only X type of trees may be planted. No flowers in
front yards. No vegetable gardens.
It is tough for "landscape committees" to check back yards, but when
developers are putting houses with a footprint of 3,000 s.f. on a 6,000
s.f. lot with a triple garage, there's darned little soil left. I think
this type of restriction is outrageous. People think they "own" property,
they only have a little control after a large expenditure of money (I know,
mortgages...that's beside the point). Look at Pasco, Washington's
website. The claim is made there that only grass is permitted in front
yards. A friend used to live in a subdivision here in Boise, and she lined
her walk to the house with flowers (Balsam, IIRC). She received a "visit"
from the subdivision landscape committee and told she was "out of
compliance." She was having marital difficulties at the time that were
more important, so she ignored the warning. Later her whole front lawn
died (talk about being out of compliance!), and her friends all suspected
her about-to-be ex- had treated the lawn with Roundup.
What happens if you refuse to apply broadleaf herbicide to your lawn? My
guess is a "visit" from the landscape committee. Architects went around
trying to change the face of subdivisions a few years ago, speaking to
community members and planning & zoning commissions. Pushing the "new age"
architecture, or whatever they called it. They wanted cars parked or
garaged in backyards, and front porches near the street so residents could
spend summer evenings socializing with people who were walking (!) to the
stores. Developers pounced on that bandwagon, and they're actually
changing the face of subdivisions. Now we need someone to spread the word
for gardens. Any ideas? Margaret Lauterbach (former county P&Z commissioner)
