The average gardener, if such a creature exists, often does not know exactly 
what he/she wants when visiting the garden center and will, if the shopping 
experience is a good one, generally come home with more than they intended.  
God bless 'em.  And if they purchase an expensive plant, it's because 
something about that variety appealed to them strongly enough to overcome the 
sticker shock.  In the case of perennials, a price difference of a buck or 
two, or less, becomes pretty irrelevant over the life of the plant.

As for staying ahead of the curve, leading the pack... isn't that what good 
garden writing does?  I'm not talking about fancy, or fanciful, prose.  I 
meant telling your readers about improving their gardens or their gardening.
