I never accept anything for evaluation and return unless they provide
free return shipment that includes pickup at my door. The time and
effort to make a trip to the post office involves fro 30 minutes to an
hour depending on the lines at the post office. That translates into an
economic expense that usually exceeds the value of the tool.
The results of a public relations effort is not immediate. This should
be clearly understood by the people who want to promote their products.
If they want more immediate results, they should purchase ads.
It would be nice to have an organization that would purchase these items
and independently test them under different climates and by people
with various skills/physical abilities. Consumer digest does this for a
wide variety of items, but I have never seen any reports of seeds,
plants, or bulbs. I seem to recall ratings for lawn mowers and leaf
blowers, perhaps even hand pruners and loppers.
I believe the GWAA should establish a database of members who would be
willing to accept accept free items for evaluation and internal reports
available only to other members.
As a member of a computer users group, software companies provide copies
for review in our publication. The reviewer keeps the copy and registers
the software or hardware in their name. These reviews are not honey
coated either.
We can allow dishonest companies to continue to make deceptive claims in
their ads or we can be part of the solution and shine an object light of
reality on the strengths and weakness of new plant introductions and
products.
Just a suggestion.
