Re: [GWL]: deed restrictions

I lived in a 96-house closed community in Springfield, IL that had deed
restrictions and such. I'm an avid gardener and tend to plant my lot solid
with stuff--even in the front yard. At first, we were appalled at the
restrictions--the real estate agent gave us the abbreviated version of the
covenants. Rather than sue the realtor and others, we decided to become
part of the process. My husband joined the architectural committee, which
was charged with approving additions to dwellings, tree removal and such.
And, I joined the landscape committee. We never had a problem with
anything. In fact, I convinced the board of directors to enhance our
greenbelt plantings with a small prairie planting, got them to stop using
Chemlawn on the greenbelts and go to the organic system of turf maintenance
(dollar savings and it's good for the kids and pets goes a long way). By
the time we moved away a year ago, others in the community were planting
wildflower belts along the greenbelts and getting very creative with
vegetable gardens.

Working within the system goes a long way toward achieving your goals.

On another subject, congrats to John Friel for the wonderful editorial he
wrote about 9-11 that appeared in this month's Green Profit.
