Re: [GWL]: deed restrictions

While covering a couple of Townships in PA for the local press, I often heard 
complaints from residents who didn't like something a neighbor was doing.  
It's important to bear in mind that most deed restrictions are NOT laws or 
ordinances, but private agreements.  Local governments will not enforce them; 
but if you annoy a neighbor or two enough that they're willing to take you to 
court, or if there's an active residents' watchdog group in your development, 
you may wish you only had to deal with the Township.
In my rural beat, most complaints had to do with non-complying outbuildings 
or animals, mostly belonging to Amish residents.  Elsewhere, there are 
regulations banning clotheslines, or anything but lawn in certain areas.
The converse is also true: No one considering purchasing a property should 
take a realtor's word for it that you CAN do certain things, like run a small 
business from your garage.  'Tain't necessarily so.

Moral: Read the fine print, ESPECIALLY if some salesperson tells you you 
don't want to.
