This brings up an area that I've been interested in for a while. Maybe
some of you with Web sites have suggestions and/or pointers.
[TECHNICAL STUFF]
I've been posting a whole bunch of my plant photos to my Web site over
the past year and a half or so. When I started, I wrote a series of
scripts that prevented image theft. These scripts were based on the
HTTP/1.0 and HTTP/1.1 header protocols and stopped users with compliant
browsers from saving or printing the images (sure a screen capture was
still possible, but oh well. I guess that's where the invisible digital
watermarks come into play).
I also used other, simpler theft prevention techniques (like the JavaScript
code mentioned above).
Anyhow, it's come to my attention that Internet Explorer versions 5.5 and
beyond don't really follow the HTTP/1.1 protocols outlined in RFC 2616.
Since most of my site visitors use MSIE, I'm concerned that my images are
going to start appearing on other sites. I've already found a few modified
versions, and I'm starting to get worried.
[/TECHNICAL STUFF]
Do any of you have image theft prevention schemes on your Web sites? I'm
interested in technical solutions; I don't want to clutter my images with
embedded copyright notices or watermarks a la Horticopia (ick!) if I can
help it.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Chris
