[GWL]: Irradiation in Canada

Thanks Arzeena. Previously unaware of this concern before I joined 
GWL, I now plan on devoting a column to irradiation.

I wondered about the possibility of Canada adopting this cautionary 
measure and contacted Canada Post. Here's what I rec'd from John 
Caines, Manager of National Media Relations in Ottawa:

"First, let me say that Canada Post does not use any irradiation
equipment to scan mail.  In light of the recent events in the United
States and the threat anthrax poses to postal employees, we are
investigating available technology that could successfully irradiate
bacteria without being harmful to other material, such as seeds and
plants, that travel through the mail system.

W e have not yet found the technology that can be applied in the
Canada Post workplace and will continue to pursue options that will
keep our work environment safe for our employees and, at the same
time, protect living organisms going through the mail."
