Re: [GWL]: Growing Tropicals Out Of Zone

Sheri:

With the exception of Musa lasiocarpa I wouldn't think anything on the
slide program would survive planted directly in the ground. I know many
people who have simply plunged pot and all in the garden for the summer and
pulled it before first freeze. That may work for you. I can send seed of
the Senna after it flowers -- the Dalechampia is available from Logees or
Glasshouse Works (i think). Most of the plants in the slides are zone 8-b
to 10. I don't have anything written other than what is on the slides but
this email works pretty well -- if you have questions I will be glad to
answer them.

Robert,

HI. The package came today, thank you! Did you have any written notes
from the lecture that would tell a bit about the slides?

Where can I find seeds of Popcorn Senna and Dalechampia discoraefolia?

Also, to what zone will the various plants in the slides grow?

Being a zone 5a, I don't know of any tropicals that will withstand the
cold here. I do have a Musa that is supposed to be hardy here but I am
keeping it inside until it pups.

I have spoke with someone who told me that by planting the plant two to
three inches deeper than normal the plant would overwinter ok as long as
it was a zone 6 or 7. What do you know about this?

Another person suggested using heating cables around the roots and then
enclosing it in a cold frame, what is your opinion on this?

Thanks!
Sheri
