Re: portable greenhouses

Claude and Andy,

I have an 8x8 portable greenhouse that I've been testing for Seeds of Change. It's essentially a heavy galvanized frame and heavy reinforced plastic with zippered doors and windows. It has survived two Maine winters without any problems. And we had over 4 feet of snow on the ground year before last! A small electric heater on cold nights extends the season into the fall and lets me get seedlings started in late March. I also use heat mats and flat covers to get good germination. We just let it freeze up in the Jan/Feb. I've found it quite useful, although we just acquired a a 8x16 Sunshine wood-frame, insulated unit. So I imagine the portable unit might see less intensive use.

How cold?  They might be used as 'season extenders' in our area but not much more.  We have a factor of snow and ice loading...and these structures simply can't handle it.
