<What do you think we should do?>
Before doing anything else, including typing another email or making another phone call or even making another cup of coffee, you should setup for yourself a consultation with a very good patent attorney. This is NOT your friend in town who does wills and real estate, and it is not the lawyer who set up your company or your in house counsel (if you have one) or any other corporate lawyer either, no matter how good these people may be at what they do.
Patents & copyrights is it's own field within the law, mostly misunderstood by most lawyers as well as regular people. It can be very technical, and who wins & who doesn't is frequently governed by some very arcane things.
If this is just a legal extortion scheme, then it is likely that there are ways around it too, which again, only an experienced and reputable patent lawyer can advise you on. I'm not saying to blow your entire company fighting this, just to get some good advice, then decide what to do.
Good luck!
