Re: gardening with children

Does anyone have any stupendous suggestions for short (one hour or less) projects to do with children, at-risk or otherwise? Or, can you recommend great books, websites or ???
I've just gotten a job working with inner-city schools here in Vancouver. Our first project is turning a gravel field into a 'natural' garden with native plants, berries, grapevines, trees, berms, etc.
Any input from garden writers would be much appreciated. Thank you, eh?

Hi Sharon!

I love the projects where you take a bale of hay and hollow out part of it, fill with soil and plant pumpkins or whatever. Kids love doing it and I like it too. Or, you can take a bag of potting soil, turn it on its side, cut a 8" X in it and poke some holes in the bottom. Plant into the hole in teh bag and treat it as a big huge potted plant. Put in whatever you want.

Third idea, get a bunch of earthboxes. I tried these for the first time this year and I am REALLY impressed. Go to www.earthbox.com.

I've been asked to do a class on gardening with children so I am also interested in ideas .

Nan
