RE: A plague of subheads


I disagree. I think that subheads should be visually useful as well as informative, and many subheads do the job successfully.

Editorially, subheads are used as an inexpensive graphic element, not a text element. They aren't there, necessarily, to clarify things, but to break up the page so it isn't all New York Times gray.

Usually, overuse of them is a sign of poor editing. Rather than being a graphics element, they get used to fill up space because there isn't enough text or art. So, rather than working hard to get a better fit, the editor slaps in a bunch of subheads to make up the shortfall.

Frankly, (s)he'd be much better off using quote boxes for that purpose, because theycontribute to reader interest while filling a lot of blank space.
