Re: A plague of subheads

I have stayed out of these editing threads until now.  But......as a former reporter and editor for a major city newspaper, I have some knowledge of style and editing.

Subheads are used to transition text without having to add words that take up more space.  A subhead signals the reader that another facet of the subject or another topic will follow.  I just used 16 words and two text lines in a standard newspaper column to say SUBJECT SHIFTS, which takes up only one text line.  Get it?

Most reporters at newspapers write their copy with subheads.  Very seldom does a copy editor insert one, unless the reporter went wordy in haste.
