Also, next time, work into your contract the discount rate at which you can buy books from the publisher. And if those books are considered "sold" for royalty purposes.

Melanie, the daylily hybrids that you selected in your chapter of "The Daylily" should not have been changed without consulting you. I am assuming that you are listed as the author of the chapter, while the main authors served as editors and forwarded the completed text to the publisher. There is supposed to be give and take between a writer and an editor. The author normally has a chance to check over his or her contribution after it has been edited and before it goes into print. Next time, Melanie, make sure that this point is covered in your contract. And this time, you have a right to complain to the editors and the publisher, unless you were not given any author status at all in this volume. That would be another horror story in itself.
Despite this unpleasantness, take a deep breath and enjoy your contribution as coauthor of a significant book.
With best wishes, Betty

Friday I received my complementary copy of "The Daylily - A Guide for Gardeners". I was quite happy with my photos but not so thrilled with my chapter in the book. The "authors" had decided to change the names of some of the daylilies I had recommended. They inserted their own hybrids, daylilies that I've never grown or even seen. I'm not too thrilled to be recommending something I don't grow.
