I thought it was considered industry standard to not consider them sold for royalty purposes. Never understood that, because a writer buying his/her own books in quantity is really no different than a bookstore doing it. With the exception that the writer's purchase won't be remaindered.
The way to maximize income from books is to assure that you can charge books you buy to the royalty account. You then buy in quantity and sell them at the full price. Meanwhile, the publisher is paying off the royalty account through regular trade channels.
So, instead of 5 or 10 or 12.5 percent, you realize at least 100% of the sale price in terms of money in your pocket.
