Re: Organic Fertilizers

Whoops!
Forgot to mention that aspect, Jo Ellen. I do ... without fail... work the soil before planting. Usually I take an area, get rid of the weeds and grass, if any. then I work in all the compost, rotting wood fines, chopped leaves, etc. I can get my hands on. I like to spread 4 to 6 inches on the area and then dig in, turning over and mixing. Then another 3 or 4 inches and work in the opposite direction while digging and mixing. Always keep a mulch on the area.
Some of the first hard clay I worked can not be picked up by the hands full. Took about 10 to 12 years for that kind of change.

Gene -- I get the same question ... what fertilizer do you use. I rarely fertilize the perennial border. I do apply compost -- which would be the same thing as chopped leaves -- periodically, but usually this time of year when the leaves are so plentiful.

People are always surprised that I don't use a lot of fertilizer on established plants.
