RE: Christmas gifts for the vegetable gardener
yes, good point Fran. Although I was connecting the look of a "fruit" basket
filled with garden gifts for the cooking section.

How about wrapping in the Sunday comics, which is biodegradable?

All great suggestions, now for the "gifted" presentation. Wrap them up;
cookbooks and gardenbooks, tools and accessories, seeds and gloves, etc in a
great container or basket with easy to use cellophane and colored twine. A
packet of seeds or a veggie holiday ornament from Kinsman Company
www.kinsmangarden.com is the finishing touch attached to the ribbon. People
need to know WHAT to buy AND how to present. Also makes a striking photo for
your article.

I have this, I love it. I have fairly severe arthritis and
there's just no way I could garden at all without it. It is
very sturdy, very well-built, and will no doubt last for
decades. The seat is large enough for ... um ....
comfortably ample derrieres.
Just one caveat: I'm 5'4" tall and the rolling seat is
absolutely wonderful for me. My husband is 6'2" tall and
it's not comfortable for him. There's not enough room for
his legs unless he stretches them out, and if he does that,
then he cannot get close enough to the raised beds or plants
to work on them. So it's probably not a good gift for a
very tall gardener. But it's really wonderful for the rest
of us, and especially anyone with any kind of joint problems
or pain.
Also, LeeValley has a page called 'Gifts for the Gardener':

I'd like to have some of their watchmaker's cases for seed
storage: I think they would be a nice gift.

(I have no association with Lee Valley.)
Books - my recommendation:
http://www.containerseeds.com/bountiful.html
'Bountiful Container' is devoted solely to the topic of
*edible* container gardening: most unusual. And it's an
absolutely smashing book.
(Disclaimer: the above ULR is on my website, so it's not a
totally disinterested recommendation in that if someone buys
the book by clicking through from my website, I get a very
small percentage of the purchase price. But you can read my
review of the book there, and this is the reason why I'm
giving the URL.)
Another recommendation: one or more Earthboxes.
http://www.earthbox.com
I have not used these yet myself, but I know several people
who have and they all rave about them.
Cheers,
Pat
