I have not grown them myself, but - on a gardening list -
this was discussed.  The consensus of opinion was that the
tubers of the ornamentals are edible, but insignificant in
size:  not worth bothering with.  

However, the vines and foliage of the traditional
non-ornamental varieties are nice looking anyway.  One
variety was recommend as having bronze-red foliage (but I
cannot remember what variety).
