I have found Linkedin useful - perhaps because we move around but I find  
groups in linkedin far more receptive to getting me oriented and keyed into  
major networks (ok most have an agenda). Before we moved to Ohio I joined a  
couple of Toledo boards which netted some great sources for garden 
profiles, and  exposed me to a great number of interesting people.
I hope to do the same with New Jersey.
As to endorsements - I don't know - I have been solicited to give  
endorsements but never ask for them. For the most part if I have enjoyed working  
with someone and freely given an endorsement, they tend to give one back - not 
 sure how much value it has given me.
