Re: magazines to websites

Terri
I had hoped to see lots of replies to your topic since it is so relevant to
the word of garden writing. Hope that you received numerous replies off
line.
There has always been many more garden writers than hard copy magazines to
publish their work. Plenty of competition for sure. Now more so than ever,
for there are fewer magazines, but... Many of the 'biggies' are still out
there. Payment from those remaining, and terms, have changed to much less
rewards for the work accomplished.
I find blogs and website content to be a different form of writing
entirely... more a picture of the author as well as the story as opposed to
a more formal presentation by magazines... magazines make you strain through
a filer to be "their style". Magazines do hold you to a higher standard,
most (but not all) web content has only the author to answer to.
I do a weekly blog, monthly newsletter, and there is no direct monetary
reward. But, it is what the "experts" of social media say you "must do".
Sharing of content and all that.
Some are managing to make money I am told.

BUT I have pondered how magazines have almost gone away, including the
beloved ones I worked for as a staffer or a freelancer over the years. I am
sure I am not the only one who misses reading--and writing for--gardening
magazines.

In their wake, though, some nice websites have sprouted. Of course, an
important difference is that these are almost entirely written, illustrated,
and designed by one person, and heaven knows how anyone makes any money
doing this.

I would be interested in your thoughts about these trends.
