Re: [GWL]: common questions

I live in a sunbelt region with lots of individuals who originally lived
in colder climates.

They generally want to grow familiar plants that require much more
winter chilling than commonly received in coastal and inland desert
climates.

Questions about growing temperate plants in our mild winter climates are
common - can you recommend low chill plants; how do you calculate winter
chilling; what are heat units; questions relating to Africanized bees.

While coastal regions may experience defused light due to low clouds or
fog, the inland valleys receive lots of intense summer light and heat.
Plants listed in national publications as being suitable for FULL SUN
need partial shade under our conditions.

Gardening for the cooler months require a different set of plants from
the crops that thrive in our summer months.

Our seasons are different from other parts of the country. Our spring
can start as early as February in coastal climates. Micro climates vary
widely within a few miles because the terrain and distance from the
ocean. Official temperatures and rainfall are measured at our downtown
airport. Inland communities can be 10-15 degrees cooler or warmer from
these official reports. Our climate is much milder than Los Angeles 2
plus hours driving time North. The 100 plus mile difference means San
Diego receives much less rainfall - average of 9 inches total with long
dry summers and wet winters.

The lack of rainfall produces various problems related to high levels of
sodium salts in the soil. Questions like "I used softened water to
irrigate my plants and they all died. What did I do wrong?" is basic
question.
