[GWL]: enabling garden
there was a question about enabling gardens earlier this week and i'm not
sure anyone answered it. if so, apologies for redundancy.
basically an enabling garden is what in the olden days would have been called
a garden for the disabled. the Chicago Botanic Garden put in a stellar
example of the genre a few years ago. it has high raised beds and hanging
baskets on pulleys that make planting possible for someone in a wheelchair, a
pool with warm water for soaking arthritic hands, and, for the visually
impaired there are fragrant plants, ornamental grasses that rustle in the
wind, herbs and other plants with interesting textures that are within easy
reach for touching and smelling. the head of this garden is in a wheelchair
himself.
the design is quite interesting--three brick-enclosed, walled rooms with
trees and shrubs along the perimeter, paving that can be navigated in a
wheelchair, and nice views. defintely worth seeing. carolyn ulrich
