Re: [GWL]: New Items

Nan -- I'm sure it variest state by state and county by county, but here in
Marion County, Indiana:

Master Gardeners can work toward Advanced Master Gardener certification after
completing the initial Master Gardener training and volunteer commitment.  To
be awarded an Advanced Master Gardener Certificate, both an additional 6 or
more continuing education hours and an additional 25 or more volunteer hours
must be completed within a year.

Last year, I volunteered a little more than 76 hours in educational
activities as a master gardener, such as teaching in MG training programs,
answering questions on our hotline or giving free presentations through the
MG speakers bureau. (I allocate a certain amount of time each year for free
talks and presentations on a first come first served basis as part of my
philanthropic commitment to the community. I also do many paid programs and
seminars.)

In addition, I volunteered about 18 hours on beautification projects, such as
planting public gardens, serving as a judge for beautification
contests/garden tours or advising public gardens on plants, etc.

Here in Marion County, the powers-that-be want us to have at least half of
our activities in the educational volunteer category, since our primary
mission is to help others learn.

I also took about 18 hours of continuing education classes, such as some (not
all) of the seminars at GWAA, horticulture lectures and symposium, etc.

I haven't tallied my activities for 2001 yet, but that gives you an idea.

Hi Jo Ellen --

Can you tell us what the difference is between a Master Gardener and
an Advanced Master Gardener?
