Re: [GWL]: More idiotic customers
One more for you: I got an early lesson in local notions when I began to do
radio gardening 7 years ago here in Mississippi. Among my first callers when
I was guest hosting for Felder Rushing was a lady wanting to know when to
prune her Hygeraniums. If she'd asked me how to make them blue, I'd have
known she was interested in Hydrangeas!
And of course there's the controversial Leeryope (Liriope, rhymes with
calliope) and down here, we say pe-O-ny and cle-O-me, with accents on the
long o's.
Just fyi, for more really deep south exposure, check out a new movie on PBS
Masterpiece Theatre in your local area's educational tv for 'The Ponder
Heart', a story by Eudora Welty set in the 1930's and filmed here in central
Mississippi last year. I haven't seen it yet, but working on it as greensman
was a labor of love - can't say I'm the biggest fan Miss Welty ever had, but
I am devoted to the plants she wrote about and grew. I was able to use
Camellias from her garden in the scenes filmed in the church as specified in
her text and that's a real pleasure.
