Re: [GWL]: Green Spring Gardens
Green Spring is a lovely public park garden. Don't know if they got
hit by the frost that got my tender stuff - they are about 25 miles
south of me.
Don Humphreys (now retired) was the guiding spirit in plantings and
development. He built a very nice rock garden right out in front -
you can't miss it - it's almost circular on a slight mound to the
left of the drive that runs up to the building entrance; one of the
few public ones around here. Illustrates just what "alpine" and rock
garden plants can be grown in our hot, sticky climate.
There are Crinums to die for, but I rather think they are probably
over. Quite a number of choice plants. This time of year, just
wander about the borders and see what's still going.
Behind the building near the greenhouse are generally benches with
plants that are for sale...go around the right side, past the compost
heaps and they are on the left-not advertised. I haven't been over
there for a few months, so don't know what's there, but always worth
a peek if you're interested. You can ask at the counter in the
building if there is anything going.
Entrance off Rt. 236 is a bit tricky. Look for a sign for a Good
Will store and turn there; garden is at the end of the relatively
short street of commercial "loveliness". You'll think you're in the
wrong place until you hit the entrance. If you are coming around the
Beltway (RT495) and exiting on Rt. 236, it will be a left turn from
Rt. 236...no stop light, so keep your eye peeled.
Enjoy!
