Re: [GWL]: Cotswolds Zone
I have long been curious: Is there a similar zones of winter hardiness just
for Europe? Something European, not from our USDA? In my book, Allergy-Free
Gardening, I have a pretty decent zonal map of Europe, where I converted
their climate to my best estimations of our USDA zones. But I'd love to see
something on this order, from the Europeans. Does anyone know where to find
such an animal??

As Margaret and Graham have suggested, the Zone is somewhere between 7 and
9. The area has relatively mild winters, but some higher parts of the
Cotswolds can get cold late springs that affect plants badly.
Unfortunately the US zone system is not entirely comparable to the UK
climate as we do not get the hot continental summers of the USA. Many
plants that grow well in USDA zone 8 may not fare well in the UK. They may
not be directly killed by the winter cold, but the lacklustre summers can
result in the late maturing of plants which therefore have insufficient
reserves to survive the winter.
One benefit is that plants which suffer from leaf scorch in hot US summers
may do much better in the UK's softer climate.
