[GWL]: Ivy

Yesterday I received an e-mail asking about the response from The American
Ivy Society to ivy being called a "noxious weed" in the Pacific Northwest.
Unfortunately, being new to computers, I hit the delete key and lost the
name of the sender. So I am sending this note as an open
letter as many of you may be interested in it anyway.

Ivy is the new darling of the plant world. Mainly because there are now
over 450 named cultivars. When I wrote my first book on ivy in 1974 there
were only 60. There is even one catalog that sells ONLY ivy (Hedera etc)
and lists over 300 cultivars. Martha Stewart's "Living" devoted 10 color
pages to ivy in the February issue this year.

It is true that one -- yes, one -- cultivar of ivy, Hedera helix 'hibernica'
grows rampantly in the Pacific Northwest. Would you brand all roses as
rampant weeds because there are bramble roses? To call ivy a noxious weed
is not only unfair it is incorrect. I attach a copy of my letter to the
government office.

The newest excitement in the ivy world is Adult Ivies. As I am sure all of
you know, ivies look and act quite differently when they are adult. They
both fruit and flower and they can be used as a shrub. Horticulturists
around the world are now starting to market "Adult" ivy.

In the next couple of weeks The American Ivy Society will be announcing the
"Ivy of the Year - 2002". I'll let you know about it.

Bear with me on the computer. I'm getting better at it - I hope.
