Re: [GWL]: Ivy
Suzanne,
thanks for your letter. I'm the sender of the query re the Pac NW's Ivy =
noxious weed advisory. Your letter to OAN is excellent.
Where plants are concerned, law and logic are often strangers. A few years
back, California banned imports of "Geranium" for fear of European corn borer
-- which can't live in true Geraniums. CA's ag dept. really meant
Pelargonium.
More recently, thanks to CITES regs, truckloads of florist Cyclamen were
being stopped at the Canadian border because Cyclamen is endangered. Can you
think of anything LESS in danger of extinction than 6" Cyclamen?
A nursery here in PA couldn't ship Lewisia into Canada for the same reason.
Never mind that the plants were grown from seed bought from Germany; the law
demanded that they be treated as though they'd been ripped out of the wild in
the Bitterroot mountains.
Now it's the Patent office... but that's another thread, and this one's
probably not all that germane, so I'll shut up now.
