Re: Exposure-only photograph requests?

I'm hoping that some of the photographers on this list who have worked
with magazines might have some input on this subject.

Lately I've been getting lots and lots of requests from publishers to
use photographs from the hort.net image gallery in their magazines.
These are coming in on the order of two to three per day.

When I ask about rates and what rights they want, I'm almost always told
that these are 'exposure-only'.  In other words, they won't pay me, but
they'll print the photo with my name tagged alongside.

Is this customary?  I worry that professional photgraphers are "going out
of style".  Publications seem to be searching the Web for pictures taken
by amateurs in the hopes that the owner will be so thrilled with the
thought of being published that they'll supply material for free.

Fortunately, I'm not a professional photographer.  I have other income
sources, so I don't have to worry about this hurting my business.  I
know that many of you aren't in that position.  Of course, I don't
mind making a little money off my work either.

So...  Have the pros out there seen this hurt your business?  Any
tips on getting the photos published?  When I mention pay they usually
just move on.  Heck, you'd think I'd at least get a free magazine
subscription.  :)
