My first instinct was to go to catalogs with good photos of the plants I need and yes - to trade them recognition and a mention in my index of sources. That's all I can afford. Now I see everyone here frowning on that.
This isn't quite the same problem we were discussing.
If you ask permission from a catalog publisher, you'll usually get it in return for a credit line. After all, they're in the business of selling plants and seeds, and such use is good PR for them.
This is not the same as asking a photographer, who makes his living with images, to supply them for free.
