Photographers, editors and writers

Carol - Ellen said well what my first impulse was upon reading your message, and that is that your publisher is at fault for your lack of sufficient funds to buy good photography, not the photographers. If you are proposing a book for which you will need to buy photographs, then it should be in the budget presented to the publisher and an advance negotiated on that point before you sign the contract. Otherwise it's on your shoulders, & that can affect the quality of the book.

The catalogue route suggested by others is a viable one for you - you'll find a lot of good imagery out there available for use in return for credit, but be careful that the catalogue company owns the rights to the images they supply to you. Sometimes they own the rights (because they photographed them or bought the rights) & sometimes they only get catalogue rights) I supply stock photos to several catalogue companies & if I saw one of my images in a book, supplied by one of my clients to the author I'd be looking for payment for the use.
