Re: Photographers, editors and writers

It's a bit tricky, Rich, in that I never did a proposal and so never presented a budget to the publisher. Timber Press saw an article of mine on black plants on Suite101.com and e-mailed to ask if I'd consider doing a whole book on the topic, we spoke on the phone and I sent them a proposed chapter outline and that was that. I did get an agent to negotiate an advance for me - they initially proposed $1500 and she managed to get them to raise that - but not much.

To get past the publication board for approval of that higher advance I had to show evidence that I could supply photos. I sent them some of my own digitals and they conceded that I knew a decent shot when I saw it but coudn't supply the resolution - so I got slides temporarily from Thompson and Morgan, Van Bourgondien and Schreiners and that did the trick. But they wanted them back very quickly and I have to wonder if they'd ever let them go long enough for a publication schedule! But at least it got me through the board.

At least insofar as they approved the larger advance. Then a new publisher took over and wanted to see a couple of chapters emphasizing the horticultural side of black plants (I'd done a couple of design and the mystique of black in cultures) and they haven't gotten to those yet - so I don't even have a contract yet much less do I know how much advance increase they gave me.

Someone mentioned something about negotiating photograph costs as a credit against royalties - I'm not sure I understand this. Clearly there is a lot I don't know about contract negotiation. I ran into this with my first book as well, but luckily that was on advertising for small businesses and I was able to supply ads I generated on the computer without much difficulty or expense.
