Oooh, this is one of my pet peeves with gardening mailing lists. :)

Actually, I think that a gardening for garden writers list would be good.
I think that another organic gardening, native plants, etc. list would
be bad.

<soapbox>

This is probably way off-topic for the list. If you want to tell me
that I'm wrong or offer some other comment/opinion, please send it
directly to me, not to the entire list.

It used to be that there were general horticultural mailing lists on
the 'Net, and they were pretty busy. Some people specialized in a
single topic and wanted their own outlet to share information without
all of the extra noise, so new, more specific lists were created.

Now there are thousands of lists about specific genera, species, and
very specific topics. The original network and distribution of
knowledge is splintered, information is lost to a smaller audience,
and lists come and go faster than one can keep track of them.

Duplicate lists about the same topics make things even worse. Interested
parties can sign up for all lists and receive a lot more mail (most of
it duplicated and often cross-posted), or just subscribe to their
favorite. Once again, information becomes splintered and lost.

Granted, there are sometimes reasons to create new lists. Usually I've
seen it happen because of clashes with overzealous or tyrannical
listowners.

Just make sure that if you create a new list it's really needed by the
gardening community. Otherwise the community just ends up getting hurt
in the long run.
