That's really a pretty low advance - not much you can do with that after you buy coffee & paper for your printer!

You don't know until you ask. Since you're going to be giving them a hand by naming them as a source in the book they may be a little accomodating. If they have good scans of the images having once put them into their catalogues, they may be able to manage without them for a little while. You need to explain the situation to them & hopefully they'll work with you.

It's an advance. You get some money up front from the publisher, specifically for photos, which they later deduct from your royalties once the book sells. Just be sure that you have it in writing that if the book really tanks (God forbid!) & it never makes the money to pay back the advance that you are not still on the hook for it.

The first rule is to not sell yourself short. If they weren't interested in what it is you are offering, for which they have to pay you money, they wouldn't be talking to you in the first place.

You may also try to find a photographer who has a lot of the images you are going to need. Many stock photographers will give volume discounts. Once you are using more than a certain number of images from the same photographer, for some it's as low as five or ten, the price per image goes down. When you know what you need, try www.AGpix.com. It costs you nothing to post a photo request, & many garden & nature photographers subscribe to it,(including some on this list), looking for buyers needing what they have to sell.
