I have started using a program called Slide Librarian. The standard version 
(2.4) is relatively cheap and designed specifically for those cataloging slides. 
It is shareware, so you can sample it for free. (www.spansoft.org)

There is the ability to store scans of each slide and to make up slide shows 
or 'light tables' of selected slides. It can also be set up to print picking lists 
and labels for the slides (a bit fiddly for the little Avery slide labels) and the 
data can be imported and exported from other database programs.

I know that there may be bigger and better programs out there but this one is 
worth a try if you are faced with this task.
