Re: images

Well, I'm no great photographer, but I do a fair amount of scanning -
both my own pix and those of others. I have yet to scan anything
that didn't require some type of post scan tweaking and do not find
the tweaking abilities pre scan to be satisfactory, partly because of
the size of the viewing image during scan (I use a HP PhotoSmart for
slides, which maxes out at 2400 pixels resolution; it was the first
iteration of this scanner, now about 5 years old). I have found that
slides can project OK if they are a bit on the dark side, but that
darkness will be exacerbated when you scan them.

You can correct overly dark or overly light images to some extent;
generally enough for screen viewing - I do not know about for use in
print publications, because really dark scans often have a lot of
noise in the background that you can lose when the size of the image
is reduced, but I would imagine would be unacceptable in a print
publication - but you need a decent program like Photoshop or Ulead
or similar to do this; and you have to go through the learning curve
with any of this software.

I am not sure this is a film problem as much as an exposure problem
when shooting the picture.

If you are new to scanning, you may want to spend some time at Wayne
Fulton's excellent "A Few Scanning Tips" site - he offers more than a
few tips; actually what amounts to a course in scanning.
