Re: self-publishing

Hi. I have self-published two children's books on composting.  I found that by self-publishing you have 100% control of what you want to say.  Get a few quotes from printers.  My two are both 22 pages and softbacks.  Both cost in the neighbourhood of $2500 for printing and stapling.  My first book has a two colour cover and I went to four colour for the second.  They are black and white inside. You will have an artist and layout fee as well.  I also had them professionally edited. Do not give it to the printer until you have made every last correction or change. Get as many of your colleagues and family to proof read it.  You'd be surprised what people spot as you are too close to the subject and often miss the obvious.  Once it gets to the printer, they will charge for all changes and more expensive if you spot something after it has gone to film (unless it is their fault).  You may be able to find a grant to help you with the cost.  I also store my books at my home.
Marketing is the hardest part, but you can sell them for whatever deals you want to make.  None of the large bookstore chains want my books as they do not retail for very much and are small on the self.  A couple of weeks ago, I bought a booth at Toronto's famous Word on the Street one day event.  Will do that again.  Sold enough to pay for the booth and made a few contacts.
Check out your markets first.  For example,  know of one person that wrote a children's story about quilting and couldn't sell it in the stores so she started approaching quilting groups and is doing ok as all these mom's etc are buying it as they love to give the give about their hobby.   My books are an adventure story about composting and have a glossary in the back pages to help teachers.  I wrote it because of my passion for composting and waste management issues.
Make it your hobby and if they sell well ...that's great.
Don't forget to get your ISBN number before you give it to the printer.  That number should be acquired a few weeks before printing as it should be in the same year.
Hope this all helps you. Good luck.  If you want more details, just email.  Larraine Roulston

Subject: [GWL] self-publishing

Does anyone have any comments, suggestions, recommendations regarding self-publishing.  I sent out a book proposal in August and have received a bunch of rejection letters praising my proposal and my writing as well as my concept - but no acceptance, yet.  I believe I have a marketable book and would like to get it between covers in this lifetime.  I'd appreciate any information either on or off list.
