I work with two newspaper editors, a magazine
editor and currently a book editor. With the periodicals, I often mark
paragraphs I think could be cut if necessary. However, I cannot
recall ever having an article cut or a word changed.
I think writers can help make the writer-editor
relationship a collegial one by recognizing the problems editing
involves.
The book has been a different and enlightening
experience, but definitely not an unpleasant one. My book editor (with Taylor) is not a gardener so he brings a
fresh perspective to the material, reminding me that readers often need terms
defined and require information I tend to assume "everyone
knows." This has been especially helpful because many of my
readers tell me they do not garden, but read my columns anyway. (My goal is
to turn them into gardeners.) I also made many time references in the
original manuscript that were puzzling so he made me aware of this
habit.
His suggestions have been helpful but I have never
felt he wanted to change my material into something I did not
intend. (The book is called Earthly Delights: A Glorious Garden the Easy
Way and will be published in spring 2004.) He has been encouraging and
supportive and I feel fortunate to be having such a pleasant
experience with a first book. Of course, the best thing he has done for me
is accept my proposal and give me the opportunity to
publish.
