Re: Future locations of Symposium
Hi, Kathy -- GWA attempts to rotate the national symposia
geographically. Right now, I think the line up is: Oklahoma City in
2007, and tentatively Raleigh, N.C. in 2008, Dallas or Denver in 2009
and I think Indianapolis in 2010.
The city or region and local GWA members put in a formal proposal to
GWA to be the host for the symposium. The city has to have hotels
large enough to accommodate the number of attendees, the trade show
and have public and private gardens for touring.
The proposal sets out who's represented on the local organizing
committee, reasons why the symposium should be held there;
description of gardens/venues for touring; benefits or advantages of
why there.
Many of us do exactly what you are doing, which is budget for the
symposium. It's easy to justify as professional development. I try to
reduce costs by finding a roommate and booking my airfare early for
the best rates, if I'm not driving. You have to consider that time is
money. I can work a half day at home before leaving by plane, for
instance; while, if I drove, it might take a whole day.
