I always buy an amaryllis, wrap it, and put it under the tree with no tag. 
If a guest shows up at the door with an unexpected Christmas gift, I just 
pull it out from under the tree -- oh, my, the tag must have fallen off --  
and give it to them. And if no one shows up, all the better for me.
